PHP Conference Brazil has always been an amazing event The Content Director “job” gave me, aside from terrific memories, opportunities that I otherwise would struggle to seize: Meeting incredible professionals from around the world, making contact with big companies and watching some high quality presentations.

As of today I’m leaving the Content Direction of PHP Conference Brazil. There’s no need for sadness tho: I’ve heard that PHPSP (the PHP UG from Sao Paulo) is already in charge of the content for this year’s edition and I’m sure they’ll do a great job.

I’d like to thank all of you who attended the event and those (speakers, UG leaders, companies) who helped me bringing a good event to our audience in these 2 years.

I hope that people who attended the 3^rd and 4^th editions (2008 and 2009, respectivily) had a good experience. I did! =)

A PHP Conference Brasil sempre foi um evento incrível. O “emprego” de Diretor de Conteúdo me proporcionou não apenas lembranças maravilhosas, mas oportunidades que de outra maneira eu sofreria pra obter: Conhecer profissionais fantásticos, fazer contato com grandes empresas e assistir a palestras de alta qualidade.

A partir de hoje estou deixando a Direção de Conteúdo do evento. Não há motivo pra tristeza: fiquei sabendo que o PHPSP (o GU de PHP de São Paulo) já está encarregado da direção de conteúdo da edição deste ano e tenho certeza de que eles vão fazer um ótimo trabalho.

Gostaria de agradecer a todos os que compareceram ao evento e aqueles (palestrantes, líderes de GUs, empresas) que me ajudaram a fazer um bom evento nestes dois anos.

Espero que as pessoas que compareceram na terceira e na quarta edição (2008 e 2009, respectivamente) tenham tido uma boa experiência. Eu tive! =)

PHP Conference Brazil have been drawing an awesome unprecedented attention this year. Not only the Brazilian PHP Community have been massively supporting us, but also Blogs, IT Portals, Companies have been gathering around the idea we’ve supported from day one: To bring an awesome event, with well known speakers and subjects that are relevant and important for the PHP professional.

Today we’ve confirmed our first, off-shore, Keynote Speaker: Sebastian Bergmann, who is not only one of PHP’s core developer, but also the creator of PHPUnit and co-founder of The PHP Consulting Company. Aside from that the event already counts more than 100 (!) presentation proposals from people all over the world: France, Germany, United States and, obviously from all over Brazil.

Next week we begin the submission evaluation period, where we’ll invite relevant and well known Brazilian PHP Professionals to evaluate the proposals of their peers. This year we expect to make an event that can even overcome the success we had in 2008. A hard task, but with all the help we’ve been receiving from all of you we’ll get there!

A PHP Conference Brasil tem atraído uma atenção incrível e sem precedentes este ano. Não apenas temos recebido o apoio em massa da Comunidade Brasileira de PHP, mas também Blogs, Portais de TI e Empresas vêm se juntando em torno da idéia que defendemos desde o começo: Trazer um evento incrível, com palestrantes de renome e assuntos relevantes e importantes para o profissional de PHP.

Hoje confirmamos nosso primeiro Keynote Speaker internacional: Sebastian Bergmann, que não apenas é um dos core developers do PHP, mas também o criador da PHPUnit e co-fundador da The PHP Consulting Company. Além disso o evento já conta com mais de 100 (!) propostas de palestras de pessoas do mundo todo: França, Alemanha, Estados Unidos, e obviamente de todo o Brasil.

Na próxima semana daremos início ao período de avaliação de submissões, onde convidaremos profissionais Brasileiros relevantes e de renome para avaliar as propostas de seus pares. Esse ano esperamos fazer um evento que poderá até mesmo ultrapassar o sucesso que tivemos em 2008. Uma tarefa difícil, mas com toda a ajuda que temos recebido de todos vocês nós certamente chegaremos lá!

Yesterday PHP Counter reached 500 participants. It’s a really good number, considering the project it’s only in it’s infancy and still restricted to the Brazilian audience. On late November we’ll be officially releasing the project, which includes assigning registration numbers, opening the counter for English-speaking audiences and start accepting translations.

We’d like to thank all UGs who support us and everyone who has been helping to spread the word about the project!

The project will be oficcially released during PHP Conference Brazil, so stay tuned!

Ontem o PHP Counter chegou à 500 participantes. É um número excelente, considerando-se que o projeto ainda está em sua infância e restrito ao público Brasileiro. No fim de Novembro estaremos oficialmente lançando o projeto, o que inclui atribuir números de registro, abrir o counter para públicos que falam inglês e começar a aceitar traduções.

Gostaríamos de agradecer aos GUs que nos apóiam e à todos que nos ajudam à divulgar o projeto!

After some problems that occurred in last year’s PHP Conference Brazil website, including some bugs and the lack of some features (such as i18n and L10n), I’ve decided to personally address the issue and develop myself a new website for the event. To develop it in a manner that allows it to be easily maintained and to avoid one of web development most common (and annoying) issues – the need to build everything from scratch at every attempt to update the website – I’m working with well known and popular development components, such as Zend Framework, PrototypeJS and Scriptaculous.

You can see a first draft of this, which is intended to show a little bit of how last year’s edition of the event went down and raise interest to this year’s edition @ http://www.phpconf.com.br/

Após alguns problemas que ocorreram no site da PHP Conference Brasil do ano passado, incluindo alguns bugs e a falta de algumas features (como i18n e L10n), eu decidi tomar conta do assunto pessoalmente e desenvolver eu mesmo o website para a edição deste ano do evento. Para desenvolvê-lo de uma forma que permita que ele seja facilmente mantido e para evitar um dos problemas mais comuns (e desagradáveis) do desenvolvimento web – a necessidade de começar tudo “do zero” cada vez que se precisa atualizar o sire – estou trabalhando com componentes bem conhecidos e populares, como Zend Framework, PrototypeJS e Scriptaculous.

Você pode ver um primeiro “rascunho”, que tem como objetivo mostrar um pouco de como foi a edição do ano passado do evento e criar interesse para a edição deste ano @ http://www.phpconf.com.br/

Look at the crowd!

Yes, I know, it took me a while to finally blog about this, but hey I’ve needed some rest after that! PHP Conference Brazil ’08… how should I put this… NAILED IT!

What an event, what a place to be! I’ve arrived at Sao Paulo on Wednesday’s November 26 morning to take care of the final details. The first great thing I saw it was the hotel room. A four star hotel – the best in the region – with rooms that were comfortable and had a very nice space to work with solid Internet connection. It was the first of the many rights Anderson and Tempo Real Eventos got and it shows what we’re here for: to raise the standards on the event and to do our best whenever possible.

On that very night I’ve had dinner with some of the people who were already at the hotel, including Todd Trichler and Chris Jones from Oracle. For those without a clue, Todd and Chris were two of our international attractions. Despite my own skepticism I was able to get some sleep that night, something around 2h.

On the following morning we had the event’s debut with a day dedicated to hands-on courses where the students got the opportunity to watch some of the best PHP teachers who spoke about everything but the kitchen sink: Frameworks, SOA, OO and How to begin with PHP, a subject I’ve always recognized as vital for people who work with a language that is so simple to begin with that lacks good material on it’s basics.

Friday began with the long waited speaks from professionals from all over Brazil and the not less awaited keynote by Chris Jones on Oracle Web-scale connection management, a great presentation from a great professional. By the way, it was a true pleasure to hear the main complaint about PHP Conference Brazil ’08: Too many good attractions happening on the same time. I’m very proud of the job I did for the event and will hopefully do better next year, but don’t kid yourself: I’ve had  help from the best. They’re not only serious and committed. They are members from the Brazilian PHP Community that understood our goal and our line of work and decided to join us to evaluate a good amount of speaks and make the tough decision about who should come and who would have to wait another year to try again. I personally wanna thank each and everyone of the members of our Proposal Evaluation Committee: Cheops Malta, Jaques Brancher, Jose Ricardo, Marcelo Araujo and Ricardo Filho.

After a great happy hour (which included free chopp rounds, a lot of music and fun) with the guys from Misgood, a lot of good friends I’ve really missed since our last edition (like Rafael Zamana and Sandro Souza, just to name a few) and the always nice presence of Luke Crouch (from SourceForge) and the Ms., along with Chris and Todd it was time for us to jump start the event’s last day. It all began with the official “opening” (c’mon everyone, it’s official, we wanted everyone to be able to be there ) ceremony. It was good to see everyone in there to hear us, it’s the time we can really speak up and do the proper thanks to everyone who helped us making the event possible. Right after the ceremony was time to Luke speak about how Sourceforge uses PHP in it’s internal processes, which attracted a lot of people. This was a real personal achievement for me: since I’ve met Ross (Turk) from SF I was trying to make a presentation like this a reality, so I wish to leave a personal thank you here to Ross, Luke and Elizabeth Castelo (who was responsible for closing the deal on SF’s sponsorship).

Still on Saturday we’ve got more speaks from all over Brazil, including the one from ADD4 people, where Klederson Bueno “joined” the presentation directly from Barcelona (Spain) via video streaming.  Another highlight on this day was the PHP & Oracle Install Fest where Chris and Todd once again did an excellent presentation. At night was time for another great happy hour where once again our off-shore speakers joined us so we could all celebrate properly the great event we all had. Here another personal highlight and thank you: I had a long conversation with Todd about the experience Oracle had with us and was very fortunate to receive from him a lot of complements and advice.

Sim, eu sei: demorei horrores pra finalmente blogar sobre isso, mas vamos combinar: eu precisava de um descanso! A PHP Conference Brasil ’08… como direi… ARRASOU!

Que evento! Que lugar para se estar! Cheguei em São Paulo na manhã da quarta-feira 26 para acertar os últimos detalhes. A primeira coisa que me impressionou foi o quarto do hotel. Um hotel quatro estrelas – o melhor da região – com quartos que eram não apenas confortáveis, mas com um espaço bem bacana pra trabalhar e com uma conexão internet sólida. Esse foi o primeiro dos muitos acertos que o Anderson e a Tempo Real Eventos fizeram e que mostra o que estamos aqui pra fazer: Melhorar os padrões do evento e dar o melhor de nós sempre que possível.

Nessa mesma noite jantei com o pessoal que já estava no hotel, incluindo o Todd Trichler e o Chris Jones da Oracle. Pra quem não conhece, o Todd e o Chris foram duas das nossas atrações internacionais. Apesar do meu próprio ceticismo consegui dormir alguma coisa nessa noite, algo em torno de 2h.

Na manhã seguinte tivemos a estréia do evento, com um dia dedicado à cursos mão na massa onde os alunos tiveram a oportunidade de assitir à alguns dos melhores professores de PHP que falaram sobre tudo o que você pode imaginar: Frameworks, SOA, OO e Como Começar no PHP, um assunto que sempre considerei vital para as pessoas que trabalham com uma linguagem que é tão fácil de começar que carece de um bom material básico.

Sexta começou com as aguardadas palestras de profissionais de todo o Brasil e a não menos aguardada keynote do Chris Jones sobre gerenciamento e escalonamento de conexões Oracle para aplicativos web, uma grande palestra de um grande profissional. A propósito, foi muito bom ouvir a principal queixa sobre a PHP Conference Brasil ’08: Atrações muito boas ocorrendo ao mesmo tempo. Estou muito orgulhoso do trabalho que realizei para o evento e espero realizar melhor ainda no ano que vem, mas não se enganem: eu tive ajuda dos melhores. Eles não são apenas sérios e comprometidos. Eles são membros da Comunidade Brasileira de PHP que entenderam nossa visão e nossa linha de trabalho e decidiram se juntar à nós para avaliar uma boa quantidade de propostas e tomar a difícil decisão de quem deveria vir e quem teria que aguardar mais um ano para tentar de novo. Quero pessoalmente agradecer à cada um dos membros da Comissão de Avaliação de Trabalhos:  Cheops Malta, Jaques Brancher, Jose Ricardo, Marcelo Araujo e Ricardo Filho.

Depois de um excelente Happy Hour (que incluiu rodadas grátis de chopp, muita música e diversão) com o pessoal do Misgood e mais um monte de amigos dos quais eu realmente senti falta desde a última edição do evento (como o Rafael Zamana e o Sandro Souza apenas para citar alguns) e a sempre agradável presença do Luke Crouch (da SourceForge) e sua esposa juntamente com o Chris e o Todd era hora de iniciarmos o último dia do evento. Tudo começou com a Cerimônia Oficial de “Abertura” (dêem um desconto, é oficial então a gente quer que todos possam comparecer ). Foi ótimo ver todo mundo lá para nos ouvir, é o momento onde podemos finalmente nos expressar e agradecer apropriadamente à todos que nos ajudaram a tornar o evento possível. Logo após a cerimônia foi a vez do Luke falar sobre como a SourceForge usa PHP nos seus processos internos, que atraiu muita gente. Essa foi uma conquista pessoal pra mim: Desde que conheci o Ross (Turk) da SF eu estava querendo tornar uma palestra dessas uma realidade, então quero deixar um agradecimento pessoal ao Ross, ao Luke e à Elizabeth Castelo (que foi responsável por fechar o patrocínio da SF para o evento).

Ainda no sábado tivemos mais palestras de todo o Brasil, incluindo a do pessoal da ADD4, onde o Klederson Bueno “se juntou” à nós diretamente de Barcelona (Espanha) via streaming de vídeo. Outro ponto alto foi a Installfest PHP & Oracle onde novamente o Todd e o Chris fizeram uma excelente apresentação.  De noite tivemos mais um grande happy hour onde uma vez mais podemos contar com a participação dos palestrantes de fora, que se juntaram à nós para que pudéssemos celebrar apropriadamente o grande evento que todos tivemos. Aqui fica mais um agradecimento pessoal: Tive uma longa conversa com o Todd sobre a experiência que a Oracle teve conosco e tive a sorte de ouvir dele muitos elogios e alguns conselhos.
