PHP Conference Brazil has always been an amazing event The Content Director “job” gave me, aside from terrific memories, opportunities that I otherwise would struggle to seize: Meeting incredible professionals from around the world, making contact with big companies and watching some high quality presentations.

As of today I’m leaving the Content Direction of PHP Conference Brazil. There’s no need for sadness tho: I’ve heard that PHPSP (the PHP UG from Sao Paulo) is already in charge of the content for this year’s edition and I’m sure they’ll do a great job.

I’d like to thank all of you who attended the event and those (speakers, UG leaders, companies) who helped me bringing a good event to our audience in these 2 years.

I hope that people who attended the 3^rd and 4^th editions (2008 and 2009, respectivily) had a good experience. I did! =)

A PHP Conference Brasil sempre foi um evento incrível. O “emprego” de Diretor de Conteúdo me proporcionou não apenas lembranças maravilhosas, mas oportunidades que de outra maneira eu sofreria pra obter: Conhecer profissionais fantásticos, fazer contato com grandes empresas e assistir a palestras de alta qualidade.

A partir de hoje estou deixando a Direção de Conteúdo do evento. Não há motivo pra tristeza: fiquei sabendo que o PHPSP (o GU de PHP de São Paulo) já está encarregado da direção de conteúdo da edição deste ano e tenho certeza de que eles vão fazer um ótimo trabalho.

Gostaria de agradecer a todos os que compareceram ao evento e aqueles (palestrantes, líderes de GUs, empresas) que me ajudaram a fazer um bom evento nestes dois anos.

Espero que as pessoas que compareceram na terceira e na quarta edição (2008 e 2009, respectivamente) tenham tido uma boa experiência. Eu tive! =)

Intro

Authentication always been one of the main concerns when developing web applications. This is a first post of a series of three (that’s what I’ve initially planned, I may extend it)that tries to shed some light on this subject. Although all examples in this series are presented using PHP and PostgreSQL, you’ll notice that the concepts involved are pretty common to other web technologies as well.

Part 1 – Concepts

I always liked to think before doing something or, in the worst case, think while doing it. Both strategies work for me, although the second one always requires more time re-coding everything =) The important thing here, and this is commonly overlooked in most development environments I’ve watched in almost 15 years working on the web, is to define which are the concepts involved in authenticating a user, how the application (or, at least this part of the application) should flow.

PHP Conference Brazil have been drawing an awesome unprecedented attention this year. Not only the Brazilian PHP Community have been massively supporting us, but also Blogs, IT Portals, Companies have been gathering around the idea we’ve supported from day one: To bring an awesome event, with well known speakers and subjects that are relevant and important for the PHP professional.

Today we’ve confirmed our first, off-shore, Keynote Speaker: Sebastian Bergmann, who is not only one of PHP’s core developer, but also the creator of PHPUnit and co-founder of The PHP Consulting Company. Aside from that the event already counts more than 100 (!) presentation proposals from people all over the world: France, Germany, United States and, obviously from all over Brazil.

Next week we begin the submission evaluation period, where we’ll invite relevant and well known Brazilian PHP Professionals to evaluate the proposals of their peers. This year we expect to make an event that can even overcome the success we had in 2008. A hard task, but with all the help we’ve been receiving from all of you we’ll get there!

A PHP Conference Brasil tem atraído uma atenção incrível e sem precedentes este ano. Não apenas temos recebido o apoio em massa da Comunidade Brasileira de PHP, mas também Blogs, Portais de TI e Empresas vêm se juntando em torno da idéia que defendemos desde o começo: Trazer um evento incrível, com palestrantes de renome e assuntos relevantes e importantes para o profissional de PHP.

Hoje confirmamos nosso primeiro Keynote Speaker internacional: Sebastian Bergmann, que não apenas é um dos core developers do PHP, mas também o criador da PHPUnit e co-fundador da The PHP Consulting Company. Além disso o evento já conta com mais de 100 (!) propostas de palestras de pessoas do mundo todo: França, Alemanha, Estados Unidos, e obviamente de todo o Brasil.

Na próxima semana daremos início ao período de avaliação de submissões, onde convidaremos profissionais Brasileiros relevantes e de renome para avaliar as propostas de seus pares. Esse ano esperamos fazer um evento que poderá até mesmo ultrapassar o sucesso que tivemos em 2008. Uma tarefa difícil, mas com toda a ajuda que temos recebido de todos vocês nós certamente chegaremos lá!

I was invited to bring a mini-course about PHP security at PHPSCConf, that will happen on May 29 – May 30. The event is organized by the PHPSC UG and more information about it can be found on their site. Furthermore, I’ll stay in SC so I can personally discuss the development schedule of PHP Counter with Silvano and to watch their PHP TestFest (that will happen on May 31).

Fui convidado a apresentar um mini-curso sobre segurança PHP na PHPSCConf, que acontecerá nos dias 29 e 30 de Maio. O evento é organizado pelo GU PHPSC e mais informações à respeito podem ser obtidas no site deles. Além disso, ficarei em SC para debater pessoalmente com o Silvano a agenda de desenvolvimento do PHP Counter e para assistir a PHP TestFest deles (que acontecerá no dia 31 de Maio).

Yesterday PHP Counter reached 500 participants. It’s a really good number, considering the project it’s only in it’s infancy and still restricted to the Brazilian audience. On late November we’ll be officially releasing the project, which includes assigning registration numbers, opening the counter for English-speaking audiences and start accepting translations.

We’d like to thank all UGs who support us and everyone who has been helping to spread the word about the project!

The project will be oficcially released during PHP Conference Brazil, so stay tuned!

Ontem o PHP Counter chegou à 500 participantes. É um número excelente, considerando-se que o projeto ainda está em sua infância e restrito ao público Brasileiro. No fim de Novembro estaremos oficialmente lançando o projeto, o que inclui atribuir números de registro, abrir o counter para públicos que falam inglês e começar a aceitar traduções.

PHP Conference Brazil ’09 officially opened it’s Call For Papers. Submissions will be accepted until July 10 2009 and can be posted at http://www.phpconf.com.br/cfp In it’s fourth edition the event will be accepting speaks in the following macro-themes:

• Beginning with PHP – Best practices, tips, tutorials…
• Security – Vulnerability treatment, source code strength…
• Frameworks & Tools – Presentations about using the variety of Frameworks, Classes, Libraries and Tools available in the market.
• Job Scenario – Tips, Certifications, market situation..
• Use Cases and Success Cases – Successful applications and uncommon uses for PHP
• Integration – How the language can be integrated to other languages/technologies, such as electronic billing, AJAX, Webservices, etc…

In this edition the event expects to surpass the excellent results obtained in 2008, when more than 700 attendees were able to see some of the best national and international presentations.

Me and Silvano Girardi Jr. are oficially pre-releasing The PHP Counter Project. The goal of this project is to gather statistic data about the usage of the PHP Language around the world. This pre-release is focused in Brazil, but when we oficially release the project, during PHP Conference Brazil ’09, the counter will be extended to English speaking countries and opened for translations.

The official launching will include also a change to a custom application (for now it runs on a Google Spreadsheet), a registry number for each participant and the display of the data collected.

Eu e o Silvano Girardi Jr. estamos oficialmente pré-lançando o Projeto PHP Counter. O obejtivo deste projeto é coletar dados estatísticos sobre o uso da linguagem PHP no mundo todo. Este pré-lançamento tem foco no Brasil, mas quando lançarmos o projeto oficialmente durante a PHP Conference Brasil ’09, o counter será extendido à países de língua inglesa e aberto para traduções.

After a short outage on my domain due to some issues I had to solve it’s time to get back on track and what better way to do so than to follow a meme? Silvano tagged me and this is a really fun meme, been reading some posts by others and there are some truly interesting things in there.

So, it’s time for me to tell my seven things:

1. I’m a huge fan of oriental culture, specially animes. In the movies sub-category I can name at least two animes that I’m completely and utterly crazy about: Akira and Metropolis. When the subject is TV shows nothing beats Naruto, Hellsing, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Basilisk and Bleach. There, I’ve said it.
2. I’m also a fan of martial arts (big surprise, huh?) and actually did some Kung Fu, but a knee problem made me drop it.
3. My first computer was a ZX Spectrum (in Brazil it was dubbed TK-90X) and my first computer language was BASIC.
4. My first professional computer language was Perl and I’m still a proud – although kinda silent – Perl Monk.
5. I’m very eclectic when the subject is music, but it’s very hard for me to find something I like nowadays, so I listen to a lot of oldies from 60′s to 90′s. Yeah, I’m getting old.
6. When I started coding for the web, back in 95 there was no such thing as an IDE so I’ve used Notepad to do it all. My personal nightmare on those days was to code nested HTML tables. Oh, another funny thing about HTML: I once lost a job opportunity because I didn’t know how to make frames =)
7. I’m very proud to be a Linux user nowadays and I’m even registered at it by the number #457824

Depois de ter meu domínio fora do ar durante um tempo devido à alguns problemas que precisei resolver é hora de voltar à atividade, e que forma melhor de fazer isso do que seguir uma corrente? O Silvano me marcou e esta é uma corrente realmente divertida, estive lendop alguns posts d eoutros e tem bastente coisa interessante por lá.

Bom, hora de contar minhas sete coisas:

1. Sou muito fã de cultura oriental, em espedcial animes. Na sub-categoria filmes eu posso citar pelo menos dois animes pelos quais sou completa e absolutamente louco: Akira e Metropolis. 6. Quando comecei à programar pra web em 95 não existia IDE, então eu fazia tudo no Notepad. Meu pesadelo pessoal era fazer tabelas HTML aninhadas. Ah, outra coisa engraçada sobre HTML: Uma vez perdi uma vaga de emprego porque não sabia fazer frames =)

The co-founder of Zend was appointed its Chief Executive Officer today. I’d have only one request for Andi and I believe most Brazilian PHP programmers second me (and Rafael Dohms, which also commented that on his twitter): Zend must be more present in South America. Since the first edition of PHP Conference Brazil in 2006 we’ve been trying to get someone from Zend to come and speak for the Brazilian audience and we’ve always received a solid “no” as an aswer.
It’s also known that people at Zend are already interested in coming, which is a result of the fast growing of PHP communities and events in Brazil, so maybe we’ll see this happening in 2009. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

O co-fundador da Zend foi anunciado hoje como seu Chief Executive Officer. Eu teria apenas um pedido para o Andi e acredito que a maioria dos programadores PHP Brasileiros me apóiam (e ao Rafael Dohms, que também comentou sobre isso no seu twitter): A Zend precisa estar mais presente na América do Sul. Desde a primeira edição da PHP Conference Brasil em 2006 tentamos trazer alguém da Zend para falar para o público Brasileiro, mas sempre recebemos um sólido “não” como resposta.
É notório que as pessoas que trabalham na Zend já estão interessadas em vir, o que é resultado do rápido crescimento das comunidades e eventos de PHP no Brasil, então talvez vejamos isso acontecendo ainda em 2009. Vamos manter nossos dedos cruzados.

After some problems that occurred in last year’s PHP Conference Brazil website, including some bugs and the lack of some features (such as i18n and L10n), I’ve decided to personally address the issue and develop myself a new website for the event. To develop it in a manner that allows it to be easily maintained and to avoid one of web development most common (and annoying) issues – the need to build everything from scratch at every attempt to update the website – I’m working with well known and popular development components, such as Zend Framework, PrototypeJS and Scriptaculous.

You can see a first draft of this, which is intended to show a little bit of how last year’s edition of the event went down and raise interest to this year’s edition @ http://www.phpconf.com.br/

Após alguns problemas que ocorreram no site da PHP Conference Brasil do ano passado, incluindo alguns bugs e a falta de algumas features (como i18n e L10n), eu decidi tomar conta do assunto pessoalmente e desenvolver eu mesmo o website para a edição deste ano do evento. Para desenvolvê-lo de uma forma que permita que ele seja facilmente mantido e para evitar um dos problemas mais comuns (e desagradáveis) do desenvolvimento web – a necessidade de começar tudo “do zero” cada vez que se precisa atualizar o sire – estou trabalhando com componentes bem conhecidos e populares, como Zend Framework, PrototypeJS e Scriptaculous.

Você pode ver um primeiro “rascunho”, que tem como objetivo mostrar um pouco de como foi a edição do ano passado do evento e criar interesse para a edição deste ano @ http://www.phpconf.com.br/
