According to popular belief, people go through an “astral hell” some time before their birthday. I’m not a superstitious guy, but from 45 days before my birthday until something around 15 days after I’ve got a pretty hard phase: from hard drive failure – including losing 4.1Gb of data and finally learning to back-the-hell-up – to illness in the family – everything is OK now – you name it, I’ve got it all. So yeah, 45 days after 2009 ended here I am to sum this wonderful year up =)

It was a great year, not only for myself but for the PHP scenario both worldwide and in Brazil. Let’s list the main points and – bare with me – explain a few others:

1) PHP Events in Brazil (in general):

What a fantastic year for the Brazilian PHP Community! We saw a lot of regional PHP events (SC, MG, MS, PB, SP, among others) rising and showing that it’s not only possible to raise the attention of the community – being regional, local or national – but as well to make great events without astronomical budgets or a huge organization committees.

Aside from those, this was my first year attending – and presenting – at Latinoware, a great OSS event that takes place at Foz do Iguaçu (PR). Many thanks to Bruno “Porkaria” Fernandes for the awesome job organizing COLAPHP (Latinoware’s exclusive PHP track) and Cesar Brod, a guy that I was very proud and happy to know, since he not only did a fantastic job in the overall organization of Latinoware, but also demonstrated an enthusiasm for PHP that is rarely seen outside the community.

2) PHP Conference Brazil:

I’m very proud of the evolution of PHP Conference Brazil. For the first time the event presented itself as a more international one, with my work on turning the website bilingual and the huge attention we drew from PHP’s international community. It was also the first time that Zend attended a South American event, with the presence of the awesome Eli White. Still on foreign speakers, we’ve got the great presence of Sebastian Bergmann, Mr. PHPUnit himself and Tom Hughes-Croucher, Yahoo’s Senior Developer and Evangelist. Let’s face it: what a great international team!

We’ve also got the always incredible presence of the best of the best that Brazil has to offer. It’s impossible to name them all, but from skilled speakers such as Rafael Dohms, Wagner Elias and Guilherme Blanco to newcommers such as my friend Ivan Rosolen, which got his debut presenting at an event, we’ve got – once again – the best possible content we could bring for our audience.

Aside from Zend we’ve got the always fantastic support of great companies- Yahoo!, Locaweb, UOL, Microsoft, among others – that show that PHP is a viable and great language and also deserves the investment and focus of the big, medium and small players on the IT market.

3) PHP projects and initiatives:

2009 was the year me and Silvano revealed PHP Counter – a project that aims to provide statistical data about PHP usage worldwide. Although we’ve failed to “officially open” the project at the Conference, as we’ve intended – we’re very sorry about that, but both our commitments ended up getting in the way – at the same time we’re getting ready to allow the community participation on building up the project with us, which we hope may revitalize and help the project to catch up.

Aside from that I’ve got to mention at least three other projects: Ivo Nascimento’s iPHP, Felipe Moura and Jaydson Gomes Webmind and Jose Wilker’s integration between Code Igniter and Zend Framework.

So, this post had three distinct objectives to accomplish – and I hope it did: To remember the main points of 2009, to explain a little bit of why I’ve been “missing” and to ensure people I didn’t forgot things that are currently a bit undefined for some projects and initiatives I’ve been involved and that I’ll solve all of those loose ends ASAP. De acordo com a crença popular, as pessoas passam por um “inferno astral” algum tempo antes dos seus aniversários. Eu não sou um cara supersticioso, mas de 45 dias antes do meu aniversário até uns 15 dias depois eu passei por uma fase realmente complicada: de falha de disco – incluindo a perda de 4.1Gb de dados e finalmente aprender a fazer a porcaria do Backup – até doença na família- tá tudo bem agora – passei por muita coisa. Então é issso: 45 dias depois de 2009 ter terminado vou tentar dar uma resumida nesse que foi um ano fantástico =)

E foi realmente um grande ano, não apenas pra mim, mas para o cenário de PHP tanto a nível de Brasil como a nível mudial. Vamos listar os principais pontos e – espero que me entendam – explicar alguns outros:

1) Eventos de PHP no Brasil (em geral):

Que ano fantástico para a comunidade Brasileira de PHP! Vimos muitos eventos regionais de PHP  (SC, MG, MS, PB, SP, entre outros) crescendo e mostrando que não apenas é possível chamar a atenão da comunidade – seja regional, local ou nacional – mas também fazer excelentes eventos sem orçamentos astronômicos ou comitês de organização enormes.

Além destes, este foi meu primeiro ano participando – e me apresentando – no  Latinoware, um grande evento de OSS que ocorre em Foz do Iguaçu (PR). Meu muto obrigado ao Bruno “Porkaria” Fernandes pelo fantástico trabalho organizando o COLAPHP (A trilha exclusiva de PHP dentro do Latinoware) e ao Cesar Brod, uma pessoa que eu tive o maior orgulho e felicidade de conhecer, já que ele não apenas fez um trabalho fantástico na organização geral do Latinoware, mas também demonstrou um entusiasmo pelo PHP que é raramente visto fora da comunidade.

2) PHP Conference Brasil:

Estou muito orgulhoso da evolução da PHP Conference Brasil. Pela pimeira vez o evento se apresentou como algo mais internacional, com o meu trabalho transofrmando o site em bilingue e a enorme atenção que conseguimos da comunidade internacional de PHP. Destaco também que foi a primeira vez que a Zend compareceu a um evento sul-americano, com a presença do incrível Eli White. Ainda sobre palestrantes internacionais, tivemos a grande presença de Sebastian Bergmann, o próprio Mr. PHPUnit e Tom Hughes-Croucher, Senior Developer e Evangelista do Yahoo!. Convenhamos: que time de palestrantes internacionais!

Também conseguimos o que o Brasil tem de melhor a oferecer. É impossível citar todo mundo, mas de palestrantes consagrados como Rafael Dohms, Wagner Elias e Guilherme Blanco até novatos como meu amigo Ivan Rosolen, que estreou como palestrante, tivemos – uma vez mais – o melhor conteúdo possível que consguimos trazer para o nosso público.

Além da Zend tivemos o sempre fantástico apoio de empresas – Yahoo!, Locaweb, UOL, Microsoft, entre outros – que mostram não apenas que PHP é uma grande e viável linguagem, mas que também merece a atenção e investimento dos grandes, médios e pequenos players do mercado de TI.

3) Projetos e iniciativas PHP:

2009 foi o ano em que eu e o Silvano revelamos o PHP Counter – um projeto que visa prover dados estatísticos do uso de PHP em todo o mundo.  Embora tenhamos falhado em “abrir oficialmente” o projeto na Conference, como pretendíamos – sentimos muito por isso, mas nossos compromissos realmente ficaram no caminho – ao mesmo tempo estamos nos aprontando para permitir a participação da comunidade na construção do projeto conosco, o que esperamos que revitalize e ajude o projeto a retomar o curso.

Além disto preciso mencionar pelo menos outros quatro projetos: iPHP, do Ivo Nascimento, Webmind, do Felipe Moura e do Jaydson Gomes e a integração entre Code Igniter e Zend Framework do José Wilker.

Bem, este post tinha três objetivos distintos a cumprir – e eu pessoalmente espero tê-lo feito: lembrar os principais pontos de 2009, explicar um pouco do porque eu andei sumido e tranquilizar as pessoas de que eu não esqueci de coisas que atualmente estão um pouco indefinidas sobre alguns projetos e iniciativas nos quais eu estou envolvido e que eu resolverei estas pontas soltas assim que for possível.
