PHP Conference Brazil has always been an amazing event The Content Director “job” gave me, aside from terrific memories, opportunities that I otherwise would struggle to seize: Meeting incredible professionals from around the world, making contact with big companies and watching some high quality presentations.
As of today I’m leaving the Content Direction of PHP Conference Brazil. There’s no need for sadness tho: I’ve heard that PHPSP (the PHP UG from Sao Paulo) is already in charge of the content for this year’s edition and I’m sure they’ll do a great job.
I’d like to thank all of you who attended the event and those (speakers, UG leaders, companies) who helped me bringing a good event to our audience in these 2 years.
I hope that people who attended the 3rd and 4th editions (2008 and 2009, respectivily) had a good experience. I did! =)

A PHP Conference Brasil sempre foi um evento incrível. O “emprego” de Diretor de Conteúdo me proporcionou não apenas lembranças maravilhosas, mas oportunidades que de outra maneira eu sofreria pra obter: Conhecer profissionais fantásticos, fazer contato com grandes empresas e assistir a palestras de alta qualidade.
A partir de hoje estou deixando a Direção de Conteúdo do evento. Não há motivo pra tristeza: fiquei sabendo que o PHPSP (o GU de PHP de São Paulo) já está encarregado da direção de conteúdo da edição deste ano e tenho certeza de que eles vão fazer um ótimo trabalho.
Gostaria de agradecer a todos os que compareceram ao evento e aqueles (palestrantes, líderes de GUs, empresas) que me ajudaram a fazer um bom evento nestes dois anos.
Espero que as pessoas que compareceram na terceira e na quarta edição (2008 e 2009, respectivamente) tenham tido uma boa experiência. Eu tive! =)

According to popular belief, people go through an “astral hell” some time before their birthday. I’m not a superstitious guy, but from 45 days before my birthday until something around 15 days after I’ve got a pretty hard phase: from hard drive failure – including losing 4.1Gb of data and finally learning to back-the-hell-up – to illness in the family – everything is OK now – you name it, I’ve got it all. Yesterday PHP Counter reached 500 participants. It’s a really good number, considering the project it’s only in it’s infancy and still restricted to the Brazilian audience. On late November we’ll be officially releasing the project, which includes assigning registration numbers, opening the counter for English-speaking audiences and start accepting translations.
We’d like to thank all UGs who support us and everyone who has been helping to spread the word about the project!
The project will be oficcially released during PHP Conference Brazil, so stay tuned!

Ontem o PHP Counter chegou à 500 participantes. É um número excelente, considerando-se que o projeto ainda está em sua infância e restrito ao público Brasileiro. No fim de Novembro estaremos oficialmente lançando o projeto, o que inclui atribuir números de registro, abrir o counter para públicos que falam inglês e começar a aceitar traduções.

PHP Conference Brazil ’09 officially opened it’s Call For Papers. Submissions will be accepted until July 10 2009 and can be posted at http://www.phpconf.com.br/cfp In it’s fourth edition the event will be accepting speaks in the following macro-themes:
- Beginning with PHP – Best practices, tips, tutorials…
- Security – Vulnerability treatment, source code strength…
- Frameworks & Tools – Presentations about using the variety of Frameworks, Classes, Libraries and Tools available in the market.
- Job Scenario – Tips, Certifications, market situation..
- Use Cases and Success Cases – Successful applications and uncommon uses for PHP
- Integration – How the language can be integrated to other languages/technologies, such as electronic billing, AJAX, Webservices, etc…
In this edition the event expects to surpass the excellent results obtained in 2008, when more than 700 attendees were able to see some of the best national and international presentations.

So, after a while working on some other projects I finally decided to change some things around here.
First thing was changing the theme. Although Ocadia is still a beautiful theme it wasn’t right for me anymore. I gotta say: when I laid eyes on this one (called iNove) it was love at first sight, since it’s all I wanted it to be: slick, functional and clean.
The second thing I’ve done was abolishing the need to register to post a comment. Although SPAM is an annoyance I honestly can handle comment moderation and I (finally?) realized how rude it is to enforce registration, so I really apologize for those who did in the past.

Depois de um tempo trabalhando em outros projetos finalmente decidi mudar as coisas por aqui.
A primeira coisa foi mudar o tema. Embora eu ainda ache o Ocadia um tema muito bonito ele não era mais o tema certo para mim. Tenho que admitir: quando vi este (chamado iNove) foi amor à primeira vista, já que ele é tudo o que eu queria que fosse: estiloso, funcional e clean.
A segunda coisa que fiz foi abolir a necessidade de se registrar para postar comentários. Embora os SPAMs sejam bem desagradáveis eu honestamente posso lidar com a moderação de comentários e eu (finalmente?) percebi como é rude obrigar as pessoas à se registrarem, então peço desculpas para todos que o fizeram no passado.

Me and Silvano Girardi Jr. are oficially pre-releasing The PHP Counter Project. The goal of this project is to gather statistic data about the usage of the PHP Language around the world. This pre-release is focused in Brazil, but when we oficially release the project, during PHP Conference Brazil ’09, the counter will be extended to English speaking countries and opened for translations.
The official launching will include also a change to a custom application (for now it runs on a Google Spreadsheet), a registry number for each participant and the display of the data collected.

Eu e o Silvano Girardi Jr. estamos oficialmente pré-lançando o Projeto PHP Counter. O obejtivo deste projeto é coletar dados estatísticos sobre o uso da linguagem PHP no mundo todo. Este pré-lançamento tem foco no Brasil, mas quando lançarmos o projeto oficialmente durante a PHP Conference Brasil ’09, o counter será extendido à países de língua inglesa e aberto para traduções.
O lançamento oficial incluirá ainda uma mudança para uma aplicação customizada (atualmente ele roda em cima de uma Google Spreadsheet), um número de registro para cada participante e a exibição dos dados coletados.

I’ve recently began re-organizing my life. Yes, it’s as huge as it sounds, but at the same time I’ve noticed that it doesn’t have to be as dramatic as it sounds. Simplifying my website was the first of a set of actions I must take in order to achieve this re-organization. It was cool, simple and a right decision: My presentations @ SlideShare already have more than 500 views (thanks, everyone, I’m really flattered) combined, which is good for everyone – good for me because allows my work to gain visibility and good for people who are interested in my work because they can find it more easily, without the need to attend events (although being at an event is an experience that cannot be replaced).
I really hope I can begin attending international events this year. It’s something I want to do for a long time, but I’m still not sure it will be really possible, due to my commitment to a series of projects in Brazil.
The next steps in my huge-but-simple-and-not-dramatic life reorganization are:
- To review, fix and complete my profiles on social networks such as LinkedIn and Naymz, just to name a couple.
- Change a few things in my blog, including it’s theme (Ocadia is an awesome theme, but it started to look too complicated for me)
- Find a good repository for my articles and manuals, similar to what I did to my presentations (I’ve heard that SlideShare can also hold documents, but that’s something I’ll check as soon as I have more time).
I hope I continue to make smart decisions and everything runs as smoothly as everything else so far. =)

Recentemente comecei a re-organizar minha vida. Sim, é uma tarefa tão grande quanto parece, mas ao mesmo tempo eu percebi que não precisa ser tão dramática quanto parece. Simplificar meu website foi a primeira de um conjunto de ações que preciso realizar pra chegar à esta re-organização. Foi bacana, simples a uma decisão acertada: Minhas palestras na SlideShare já somam mais de 500 visualizações (obrigado à todos, me sinto realmente lisonjeado) quando somadas, o que é bom pra todo mundo – bom pra mim porque me permite uma maior visibilidade do meu trabalho e bom para as pessoas que se interessam pelo meu trabalho porque elas podem encontrá-lo mais facilmente, sem a necessidade de comparecer à eventos (embora participar de um evento seja uma experiência que não pode ser substituída).
Realmente espero começar à participar de eventos internacionais este ano. É algo que desejo faz tempo, mas ainda não sei se será realmente possível, devido à meus comprometimentos com uma série de projetos no Brasil.
Os próximos passos na minha enorme-mas-simples-e-não-dramática reorganização de vida são:
- Revisar, consertar e completar meus perfis em redes sociais. como LinkedIn e Naymz, pra citar dois.
- Mudar algumas coisas neste blog, incluindo o tema (Ocadia é um tema maravilhoso, mas começou a parecer um pouco complicado demais pra mim)
- Achar um repositório bacana pros meus artigos e manuais, como fiz com as palestras (ouvi falar que a SlideShare também trabalha com documentos, mas isso é algo que vou ter que verificar com mais calma)
Espero continuar tomando decisões certas e que tudo corra de forma tão suave como o restante tem sido até agora =)

My website is finally back on-line. I was having quite a hard time with it before, because of one main issue: keep the information on it updated. What I’ve realized was that it has too many “useless” content. Take my presentations as an example. Every time I wanted to add a presentation I’ve had to update some HTML and stuff like that, which was a real PITA. So I’ve decided to apply a programming concept – KISS or “Keep It Simple, Stupid! – to it and make use of well known and popular on-line resources, such as SlideShare.
Another long desired feature was the translation to English, which is now available!
On the next few days I’ll be removing the old content from my site, so please update your links and bookmarks. And oh, if you can’t remember my website is available at my “main” URL: http://www.galvao.eti.br/

Meu site está finalmente on-line de novo. Estava tendo problemas com ele antes, por causa principalmente de um problema: manter a informação atualizada. O que eu percebi foi que havia muito conteúdo “inútil”. Pegue minhas palestras, por exemplo. Toda a vez que eu precisava incluir uma palestra eu precisava editar código HTML, etc… o que era realmente muito chato. Então decidi aplicar um conceito de programação – KISS ou “Mantenha Simples, Estúpido” – em meu site e utilizar alguns recursos on-line conhecidos e populares, como o SlideShare.
Outra coisa que fazia tempo que eu queria implementar era a tradução para o inglês, que está disponível à partir de agora!
